I am extremely excited to share some news.
I am joining 8th Wall as VP of Product, working with Founder and CEO Erik Murphy-Chutorian and team on our shared mission to ensure augmented reality is for everyone.
I have worked in augmented reality (AR) for over a decade, mostly as a champion to usher the technology in, and I believe we are in a critical stage of AR’s journey to become the next wave of computing. The time has come for AR to move from a technology to a solution and to do this we need to empower two essential groups: developers and users.
- Developers need intuitive tools to create high quality, meaningful and value-centric AR experiences and solutions that are capable of earning revenue and achieving scale.
- Users need to be able to access these experiences and solutions quickly, easily and with as little friction as possible with whatever device they currently have in their hands (or heads).
8th Wall is making this happen.
8th Wall has built a world-class platform that enables developers to create AR experiences that work across devices either as a native application or in mobile browser. As a result, anyone can easily experience the magic of AR — no matter what device they are on.
8th Wall has unlocked the massive opportunity of WebAR with the world’s first augmented reality platform of its kind for the mobile web which allows users to interact with AR content by simply punching in a URL in a browser. The 8th Wall platform also provides native libraries that integrate with ARKit and ARCore to power mobile applications that can run across commonly used Android and iPhone devices.
I cannot underscore enough the critical role 8th Wall is playing in the success of augmented reality today. I am beyond excited to join an incredible team in their efforts to support the AR developer community in delivering quality AR experiences to the market.
In some ways it feels like I am coming home to 8th Wall. Erik and I met when he launched 8th Wall back in 2016 and I have continued to be impressed with the product growth, traction and investment he has achieved since. I have also had the pleasure of working with most of the 8th Wall team in supporting announcements and product demos including the WebAR scavenger Portal Hunt featured at the 10th annual AWE USA where 8th Wall also won Best Developer Platform.
It is an exciting time to be joining 8th Wall. The team just celebrated its one year anniversary of the 8th Wall Web platform which has over 10,000 developer accounts and been used to create over 5,000 WebAR apps for well known brands such as adidas, Lego, Toyota, Microsoft, Sony Pictures and TIME, just to name just a few. And these 8th Wall WebAR marketing activations are engaging users! 80% of users are spending more than 1 full minute and 50% of users are spending greater than 2 minutes interacting within a single WebAR marketing activation. And with an estimated 2.97 billion WebAR-compatible devices, compared to just 1.11 billion ARKit- and 550 million ARCore-compatible devices, we are just getting started.
I am grateful for the opportunity to support the AR space as part of a company which is just as passionate and committed to the AR industry’s success and the success of those that are working within it as I am. I look forward to working with all of you as VP of Product at 8th Wall.
Together, we will make sure augmented reality is for everyone.
